Black Kapton tape

Product ID : J-630B
Product Attributes :

Black Kapton Tape is a polyimide masking and protection tape with a black surface treatment that offers the same high-temperature resistance, electrical insulation and dimensional stability as standard PI tapes while improving light/heat absorption and visual contrast for masking applications. Typical uses include high-temperature masking for reflow, powder coating and anodizing, circuit repair and thermal protection during device refurbishment, 3D-printer bed and fixture masking, coil and transformer winding insulation, and as a heat-resistant reinforcement or splice material in composite processes. For vacuum bagging and primary vacuum seals, specialized sealant tapes are normally preferred; polyimide tape is best presented as a heat-resistant reinforcement or splice/patch option and should be validated for any critical sealing or long-term outdoor exposure.

Product Description

Product Description:

J-630B Matte Black Polyimide Tape is a high-temperature masking and protection tape made with matte black polyimide film and silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is commonly searched as black Kapton tape, black PI tape, or matte black Kapton-type tape, but the correct material description is black polyimide tape unless a specific branded film is required.

Compared with standard amber polyimide tape, J-630B provides the same general PI tape advantages in high-temperature resistance, dimensional stability, and electrical insulation support, while adding a matte black surface for low reflectivity, visual contrast, and light-shielding applications.

The matte black surface helps reduce glare during inspection, masking, and assembly work. This makes the tape useful for PCB processing, display modules, camera modules, sensor components, optical parts, and electronic refurbishment where ordinary glossy black tape may create unwanted reflection.

J-630B is part of our polyimide tape for high-temperature masking range, but its matte black surface gives it a more specific role in optical, electronic, and visual masking applications.

Typical Applications:

· PCB reflow soldering masking, wave solder masking, and gold finger protection

· Temporary PCB protection during repair, refurbishment, or heat treatment

· Optical and display light shielding for sensors, camera modules, and electronic components

· Low-glare masking where matte surface appearance and visual contrast are important

· Electrical insulation support for coils, transformers, capacitors, and wire harness areas

· 3D printer bed masking and fixture protection

· Powder coating, anodizing, and other high-temperature masking applications, subject to testing

· Composite process splice, patch, or reinforcement support during curing

· Splicing silicone-coated papers, films, or process liners under heat-resistant conditions

For SMT, reflow soldering, gold finger masking, and temporary component protection, see our PCB and electronics masking solutions.

For sensor modules, display assemblies, camera modules, and light-blocking parts, this product can also be compared with our black Kapton tape for sensor shielding guide.

Key Features:

Matte Black Low-Glare Surface
The matte black polyimide film helps reduce surface reflection and improve visual contrast during assembly, masking, and inspection. It is better suited than glossy black tape for applications where glare may interfere with visibility or optical performance.

High-Temperature Masking Performance
The polyimide film and silicone adhesive system support high-temperature masking applications up to 260°C. This makes J-630B suitable for PCB solder masking, powder coating masking, anodizing masking, and heat-related protection work when validated under actual process conditions.

Light-Shielding and Visual Masking
The opaque matte black surface provides practical light-shielding performance for electronic, optical, display, and sensor-related applications. If a project requires a specific light transmittance, optical density, or reflectivity value, testing should be confirmed before mass production.

Silicone Adhesive for Clean Masking
The silicone adhesive provides stable adhesion for high-temperature masking and temporary protection. Clean removal depends on surface type, dwell time, process temperature, pressure, and surface coating, so testing is recommended for painted, coated, plastic, or delicate surfaces.

Electrical Insulation Support
Polyimide film offers useful electrical insulation support for electronics, coils, transformers, and components exposed to heat. For high-voltage insulation designs, dielectric strength, breakdown voltage, and certification requirements should be confirmed before use.

Die-Cutting and Custom Shapes
J-630B can be slit or die-cut into custom widths, pads, strips, and masking shapes. A release liner can be added for die-cutting or automated placement if required by the application.

Application Notes:

J-630B is designed for high-temperature masking, visual masking, temporary protection, and electrical insulation support. It is not intended to replace certified electrical insulation systems unless the required dielectric data and approvals are confirmed.

For PCB masking, the tape should be tested under actual soldering, reflow, wave solder, and removal conditions. Edge lifting, adhesive residue, and surface staining may vary depending on board finish, temperature profile, dwell time, and removal timing.

For optical, sensor, camera, or display applications, the matte black surface is useful for reducing reflection and improving visual contrast. If strict light-blocking performance is required, buyers should confirm optical test data such as transmittance or reflectivity before bulk use.

J-630B is not designed for primary vacuum bag sealing. In composite processing, it is better positioned as a heat-resistant splice, patch, masking, or reinforcement tape. Specialized sealant tapes are normally preferred for primary vacuum seals.

Standard J-630B is an insulating matte black polyimide tape. If surface resistance control is required, consider a separate ESD polyimide tape grade with confirmed resistance data.

If the process temperature is lower and cost is more important than heat resistance, compare Kapton vs green PET tape for PCB masking before selecting the material.

For buyers comparing film thickness, adhesive type, residue risk, liner options, and masking temperature, our polyimide tape buying guide may help before sample testing.

Customization and Supply Options:

· Custom roll widths from narrow slit rolls to wide-format rolls

· Standard roll length 33 m, with custom lengths available upon request

· Die-cut pads, strips, discs, and custom masking shapes

· Optional release liner for die-cutting and automated placement

· OEM labeling and private packaging

· Sample rolls available for process validation

· Bulk supply for electronics, masking, repair, and industrial users

Storage and Handling:

Store rolls in a clean, dry environment away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and solvent vapors. Keep the tape in its original packaging before use.

For best performance, apply the tape to clean, dry, and oil-free surfaces. Apply firm pressure after placement to ensure full contact with the substrate. If the roll has been stored in a cold environment, allow it to return to room temperature before use.

FAQ:

Q1: What is the difference between matte black polyimide tape and standard black polyimide tape?
A: Matte black polyimide tape has a low-glare surface that helps reduce reflection and improve visual contrast. It is better suited for optical, display, sensor, and inspection-related masking than glossy black tape.

Q2: Can J-630B be used for PCB reflow soldering masking?
A: Yes. J-630B can be used for PCB masking, reflow soldering masking, wave solder masking, and temporary component protection. Testing is recommended under the actual temperature profile and removal conditions.

Q3: Does this tape provide complete light blocking?
A: The matte black surface provides practical light-shielding performance. If a project requires a specific optical density, transmittance, or reflectivity value, test data should be confirmed before production use.

Q4: Is J-630B suitable for electrical insulation?
A: It can support electrical insulation in heat-related electronic applications. For high-voltage or certified insulation systems, dielectric strength, breakdown voltage, and approval requirements must be verified.

Q5: Can this tape be used for vacuum bag sealing?
A: No. J-630B is not recommended as the primary vacuum seal. It may be used as a heat-resistant splice, patch, masking, or reinforcement tape in composite processes when validated by testing.

Q6: Is this an ESD or conductive polyimide tape?
A: Standard J-630B is not an ESD or conductive grade. If surface resistance control is required, a separate ESD polyimide tape should be selected with confirmed resistance data.

Q7: Will the tape leave residue after high-temperature use?
A: Clean removal depends on surface type, temperature, dwell time, pressure, and removal timing. Buyers should test the tape under actual process conditions before bulk use.
